March 23, 2015How to Improve Your Posture
April 29, 2015When a nerve is pinched in the wrist, this injury is known as Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS causes numbness and pain in the middle and index fingers as well as weakness of the thumb. In the wrist, there are eight bones known as carpals that form a “tunnel” shape. This is where the nerve leading to the your hand extends and how Carpal Tunnel received its name.
Symptoms and Signs
Symptoms and signs of CTS include:
-
- Feeling that your fingers are swollen, when little or no swelling is visible
- Pain shooting from the hand up the arm and as far as the shoulder
- Tingling that is painful in one or both hands that can cause sleep disturbance
- Feeling like you are not able to use your fingers
- Tingling in the hands during the daytime, followed by a decrease in ability to squeeze things
- Experiencing loss of strength in the thumb muscle, located near the palm
What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
CTS is caused by swelling around the tendons which results in pinched nerves. Swelling is usually a result of repetitive and forceful movements of the wrist. Additionally, certain diseases, pregnancy, trauma, and certain diseases, can trigger CTS. CTS can also be genetic.
Patients who work on a computer keyboard, or work with small hand tools in manufacturing on a regular basis are at higher risk. Females are two to five times more likely than males to develop CTS. Tobacco, alcohol and high caffeine intake can also contribute to risk factors.
Prevention of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
By making small changes in your work or leisure habits, you can prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:

-
- Alternate repetitive tasks
- Change or modify any activities that put pressure on your wrists
- If you use a computer at work, use an adjustable chair and keyboard. Additionally, a wrist rest can help alleviate symptoms
